Poor Glucose Control Linked To Brain Volume Shrinkage In The Elderly

Older adults suffering from either pre-diabetes or full blown diabetes show significantly greater rates of brain volume shrinkage according to the results of a study presented this month at the joint conference of the International Congress of Endocrinology and European Congress of Endocrinology.

The research, led by Dr. Katherine Samaras, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of New South Wales in Australia, focussed on 312 adults aged between 70 and 90 who were followed up over 2 years.


Researchers Find Impaired Glucose Tolerance More Likely In Fast Eaters

A Japanese study has found that fast eaters may be at a significantly greater risk of developing impaired glucose tolerance compared to those who eat at a normal speed.

The study, which appeared online last month in the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, was conducted by researchers at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Tsukuba. The study involved 172 initially healthy Japanese men and women who were followed over 3 years.


Regular Exercise Cuts Type-2 Diabetes Risk

Regular physical exercise can lead to massive reductions in type-2 diabetes risk according to a number of scientific studies.

One of the largest studies on the impact of exercise on type-2 diabetes risk was conducted in 1992 by researchers from the Department of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. The researchers used data from the Physicians’ Health Study which involved 21,2171 male physicians from the United States aged between 40 and 84 who were followed for five years.


Pre Diabetes – A Common But Often Ignored Illness

While more than 20 million Americans have diabetes, it is estimated that a further 60 million have a condition known as pre-diabetes, which is also referred to as Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) or Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG). People with pre-diabetes have blood-glucose levels that are higher than normal, but are not quite high enough for them to be classified as a diabetic.
